Oppo is worried about the rise of fake Find 7 and N3 smartphones

Usually, fake smartphones imitate handsets originally made by big companies like Apple or Samsung, but sometimes smaller vendors are also having troubles in this regard. China's Oppo, known for striving to make unique devices, is one of these smaller vendors.

Recently, Oppo's been discovering a rising number of fake Find 7 and N3 smartphones. According to SoyaCincau, 644 cases of counterfeit Oppo handsets have been reported in Malaysia alone, and the problem is likely widespread in other Asian markets (including, of course, China).

Obviously, Oppo is looking into this, and hopes ...

How to manage your personal dictionary (add and remove words) on Android

Please note: this is a tutorial for inexperienced users (beginners).

Android's built-in dictionary (you know, the one that helps you spell right and powers auto correct) is really comprehensive, but it's obviously not tailored to each and everyone's needs. That's why Google allows us to use personal dictionaries on our Android smartphones and tablets - so we can add new words, or names that we don't want to be flagged as misspelled.

Adding a word to your personal dictionary is easy as pie. Whenever you're typing a message - via whatever messaging app you may be using - if a word ...

This beautiful note taking app for Mac and iOS uses hashtags to organize your notes

05-mac-icloud

Note taking apps are dime a dozen these days, but occasionally I stumble across a new one that does something smarter than the rest. Letterspace, an app for iOS and Mac, is a beautifully designed free app that organizes your notes in an interesting new way we’ve seen on only social media so far: hashtags. With Letterspace, you can hashtag key words inside your notes to help find them easier later, which is an ingenious way of surfacing the important part of a note, rather than requiring you to tag them separately. You’re also able to @mention people in your…

Watch Mophie's first Super Bowl ad, it's a hoot!

Business must be great at Mophie. The company is apparently selling a ton of its smartphone cases that feature an embedded battery because after all, a Super Bowl ad ain't cheap. And Mophie is running a spot during Super Bowl 49 as well as offering as much as $1 million in prizes for a contest related to the big game.

First things first. Mophie's ad is tremendous fun as it depicts the end of the world. Dogs are walking their master, it is raining fish, a hurricane invades Nebraska, and there is general chaos through the world. The idea is to show how smartphone users feel when their batteries ...

When exactly does a startup become a mature tech company?

Cartman

Paul Malicki is the global CMO of Easy Taxi and is based in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Early in my adventure in startups, I nurtured a young tech company. At the time, the company was run out of a garage. This same company would eventually become a million dollar revenue business with global operations. Yet, the rationale behind the existence of such an ‘abstract’ microeconomic model has never been questioned and the inflow of capital to the industry has continued ever since. Although more than 20 years has passed since companies like Apple or Netscape set the standards for startup expansion,…

HTC will miss its 90-day Android Lollipop update goal for some One (M8) and (M7) variants

HTC today revealed that "some carrier versions" of its One (M8) and One (M7) smartphones won't meet the 90-day goal that the company had previously set for the roll-out of Android 5.0 Lollipop updates. The reason for this is that, as you may know, Lollipop included (and still includes) some bugs, which Google's been trying to fix with smaller updates. HTC doesn't want to compromise usability for the sake of perfect timing, that's why it decided to delay the update.

HTC reassures users that it's working hard with carriers and Google to deliver the update to all One (M8) and One (M7) devices ...

Rap video stars dancing HTC One (M8)

HTC, which in the past has been criticized for blowing big bucks on pointless promotion, has come up with a cool way to promote the brand. The genius of Mailchimp’s sweaty monkey finger

If there’s one bit of creative user interface design that I love, it’s the animation that appears when you’re about to send an email in Mailchimp. The chimp’s finger hovers over the button, dripping with a tasteful amount of stress-sweat. While it looks a little out of place compared to the rest of Mailchimp’s interface, it does a brilliant job of making you think. ‘Did you check your email? No, did you double… triple-check it? Are there any typos? Do all the links work? Have you said anything that will massively offend your subscribers?’ Sure, Mailchimp could have just written…

Verizon sends $42,000 bill to Connecticut woman

Usually when we tell you a story about a $42,000 cellphone bill, it turns out to be an error on the part of the carrier. But not in this case. A Connecticut woman who we will call "Dora" (not her real name, obviously) made a deal with a friend. As long as this friend paid the phone bill each month, Dora allowed him to use the phone number.

The problem is that the friend skipped town, leaving the woman with a big fat Verizon bill of $42,427.21. A collection agency also sent out correspondence. The bill was high because of a large volume of calls to and from the U.K., France, Italy, and Africa. ...
