Beats 1 is down, and there’s no explanation for it

Beats1DownTNW
Beats 1 is down. When launched in Apple Music, Beats 1 gives a mysterious error code that simply says the radio station can’t be launched. Other stations on Apple Music seem unaffected. There’s no explanation given for the downtime, either. Apple has yet to address the problem, and there are no details provided with the error code. It’s not clear how widespread the outage is. The radio station that aims to bring personality back to streaming music is actually really nice. In my review of Beats 1 earlier today, I also noted the DJs seemed to be having trouble figuring out…

iTunes 12.2 with Apple Music is rolling out now

Screen Shot 2015-06-30 at 4.38.26 PM
Apple Music, launched earlier today for iOS, lacked a desktop component. There was also the confusing issue of iCloud music library streaming and iTunes Match, but that’s been resolved as iTunes 12.2 is rolling out to users now. The revamped iTunes mimics Apple Music in many ways when you’re in the Music section. Buttons along the top now show Radio, For You, Connect and New by default. The layout within those buttons is just like the mobile version, too. When an album is selected, the drop-down menu showing the tracks within looks just like the album screen in the Apple…

Beats 1 radio is now taking your song requests

Screen Shot 2015-06-30 at 2.55.50 PM
Beats 1 is off to a great start, and it’s about to get a lot better. The streaming radio service is about to start taking requests. If you want to hear a particular song, Beats 1 has local phone numbers set up for users in the US, Canada, UK, France, Japan, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Australia, Italy, Ireland and New Zealand. There’s a toll free number set up for the US, but Beats 1 suggests users not in the above mentioned territories use the number that directs to their Los Angeles office. For a full list of numbers, see the…

YouTube now streams 60fps video on Android and iOS

Screenshot_2015-06-30-17-42-58
YouTube introduced the ability to play videos in 60fps back in October of last year, but that was limited to the Web. Now it’s introducing the same functionality on the mobile YouTube apps as well. The new high frame rate support appears to have been turned on via a change on the server end, so you shouldn’t need to update your app to check out the new quality settings – just look for any 60fps video and you’ll be set. Here’s one clip such from Far Cry 4, for instance: Once you’ve found an appropriate video, if it doesn’t start…

First impressions: Beats 1 is exactly what radio should be

Beats1TNW
There’s something to be said for human curation. Beats 1 hopes to deliver the best in curation without the headaches we have with terrestrial radio — like ads. Aside from routinely (and excitably) reminding us we’re listening to Apple Music, Beats 1 delivers on that promise. Mostly. Zane Lowe might have had an interesting beginning to his Beats 1 endeavor, but that was forgotten about an hour in. Once the music started rolling, Beats1 showed its muscle. The aim of Beats 1 seems to be a worldwide, non-stop radio channel that is curated by actual DJs across the globe. Currently,…

Gmail on the Web gets an emoji refresh and new theme editing tools

Themes-GIF
Google created a full set of blob-like emoji for Android and Hangouts, but so far you haven’t actually been able to use them in your emails on the Web. That changes today with the most recent update to Gmail. Now you can use all the same emoji you’re already used to on Hangouts, which are a step up from the old tiny squarish ones. Gmail is also introducing hundreds of new high resolution themes. Moreover, you can now edit the themes yourself, including adding blurs and vignettes or changing between light and dark themes. Google says the update will roll…
