Periscope for iOS can now block other users’ messages in peace

0326_periscope-798x310
A new update to livestream app Periscope for iOS now lets you block the crap out of anyone who is bothering you without fear of repercussion, which honestly seems like it should have been in there in the first place. Periscope update 1.1.12, released yesterday, allows users a little more privacy when blocking a troll who has left nasty messages on a broadcast. Now, when you block someone’s message within a livestream, that message will appear as blocked to you only. This means that when you tap a crappy comment and block that person into oblivion, the message will appear as…

Pinterest announces new integrations with IFTTT and Polyvore

OAuth-Flows
Pinterest has announced its first round of integrations — with IFTTT and Polyvore — built on its new Developers Platform. Since launching the platform a few months ago, the network has worked with developers to take advantage of Pinterest APIs to help people do more with their pins. According to a new blog post today, you can now log in to other apps using your Pinterest account. The Pinterest Channel on IFTTT, for example, lets pinners connect their account to hundreds of products and devices. You can automatically save pins to a board from actions in other apps  — from liking an Instagram photo, upvoting a Reddit post or favoriting an…

Google’s new $15 Ethernet adapter for Chromecast could finally solve your connection woes

Chromecast Ethernet
Update 4:26PM EST: Well, that was fast – the Ethernet adapter is already sold out. No word on when stock will be available again yet. Google’s Chromecast is a great, affordable way to stream content from mobile devices to a TV, but it’s not without issues. Google is now out to fix what may be the biggest one – dropped wireless connections – with a new $15 Ethernet adapter. Chromecasts connect to crowded 2.4 Ghz Wireless N networks. That means your chances of finding a completely clear wireless channel are slim, and interference could significantly impact your device’s performance, causing…

Matrix-style camera effects could soon come to your iPhone

Bullet Time
Creating amazing cinematic special effects is flipping hard, especially if you want to do a slow-mo 360 around a subject a la ‘The Matrix’. That particular special effect, called Bullet Time, generally requires many fancy cameras grouped together in a small space to allow for changes in camera angle even when the action is no longer moving. It’s expensive. That is, until Columbia University researcher Yan Wong and his team distilled the technique into a handy mobile app. In their report, released on July 4, they said that the app, called CamSwarm, requires just a local Wi-Fi connection and a few different…

EyeEm is now using its aesthetic algorithm in the discovery feed

EyeEm_Camera_iPad_9.7
EyeEm is making some changes to how we discover imagery via its app. Now, the main feed will use EyeEm’s aesthetics algorithm and highlight curated editorial content. The algorithm, which EyeEm picked up with its acquisition of Sight.io, is being used outside of search for the first time. EyeEm’s feed will have “recommended photographers, beautiful images and inspiring albums to promote the community’s work and inspire new connections.” To keep things streamlined, EyeEm is removing everything you currently follow from the main feed to focus on discovery. Content will still focus on your interests and location. To help photographers take…

How to take over the app store in 48 Hours

app store
Gilad Bechar is the Co-Founder & CEO of Moburst, a global mobile marketing agency helping first tier startups and brands grow their mobile business.   It’s obvious enough that a newly launched app can’t really take off on its own – vast marketing efforts are vital to accomplishing any kind of exposure and acquiring an initial user base. After launching their app, marketers often watch eagerly and anxiously as the first users pile on. However, in many cases early-stage apps take a long time to develop an active user ecosystem, and in most cases fail to do so. It’s important…

Reddit mods defend AMA blackout: ‘The issue goes beyond Reddit’

Reddit
Brian Lynch and Courtnie Swearingen, two attorneys and Reddit moderators for the popular subreddit r/iAmA, released an op-ed today in the New York Times that catalogued the frustrations that led to the blackout on the subreddit — and later, much of the website — nearly a week ago, when the company abruptly fired talent director Victoria Taylor, also known as /u/chooter. “Ms. Taylor’s sudden termination is just the most recent example of management’s making changes without thinking through what those changes might mean for the people who use the site on a daily basis,” they wrote. According to the pair, which in turn…

Twitter will soon let app advertisers use video, introduces new bidding process for ad space

TwitterAppAdsTNW
Twitter is making more changes to its mobile advertising platform. In a blog post celebrating one full year of mobile ads, Twitter says app ads will soon have the option to be video-based. The video ads will be much like those you find on other platforms, such as iTunes. Twitter isn’t limiting advertising to in-app activity as Apple does, though, so videos could also cleverly highlight the benefits of the app. The company is also changing how advertisers pay for ad space. A new “optimized action bidding” scheme only charges for ads that see results: This new bidding type allows app install…

Spotify is actively encouraging iOS users to stop paying for streaming via iTunes

Spotify
Spotify, like most streaming music services, will cost you $9.99 per month. The company has long charged those who pay for its service via iTunes $12.99 monthly to offset Apple’s 30 percent cut of purchases. Now, Spotify is actively encouraging users to step away from iTunes for payments. The Verge got its hands on a guide Spotify is sending to users, which outlines specifically how to stop paying via iTunes and pay Spotify directly. It has links for both stopping payment via iTunes and signing back up via Spotify. It’s a tricky juggling act, though. To avoid interruptions in service,…
